ABSTRACT

Small Satellites known as CubeSats have revolutionized low earth orbit (LEO) with microprocessor densified architectures weighing less than 4 pounds due to chip densification. 

Initial deployments of CubeSats have been dismal with failures upwards to 60%. Learn from Bob Vermillion, ESD Materials Subject Matter Expert (SME) of the critical importance for the adoption of ANSI/ESD Standard Methods in combination with NASA Standard 8739.6B, Section 7 to reduce the risk of Field Induced Model Discharge in non-negotiable environments. Since 2017, Vermillion, NASA ESD Technical Authority, has presented on ESD issues in extreme conditions of LEO to Auburn University, NASA Academy of Aerospace Quality, CalPoly CubeSat Developer Workshop and, most recently, the 2026 Electrostatics Society of America conference, hosted by Kennedy Space Center. 

The Prelude

Bob is an active member of the ESDA Standards Committee and co-author of select ANSI/ESD Standards. Internationally recognized for groundbreaking white papers and peer reviewed articles for ESD/EMI material solutions, Bob's subject matter expertise transcends Space & Defense to Consumer Electronics, Medical Device, Automotive, Energy and Healthcare (NASA-STD-8739.6B, Section 7, MIL-STDs. and application-specific ANSI/ESD Standards).

By special invitation, Bob was first to present and publish on suspect counterfeit materials and packaging in the DoD Supply Chain for the 2010 NASA Quality Leadership Forum. Vermillion's educational outreach to Government and Industry for ESD compliant materials is the first line of defense for reliability of electronic components in manufacturing, long term storage and the retail environment (aka outside the EPA).

Recipient of the 2018 DoD Military Packaging Hall of Fame, Vermillion developed a novel ESD protective, anti-counterfeit advanced packaging engineering solution for the US Navy, and, still in use today.

Named the NASA ESD Technical Authority in 2018, Bob uniquely developed the iNARTE® Space & Defense ESD/EMI Engineer/Technician Advanced Technology Training in collaboration with Exemplar Global, international 3rd party certification body and American Society of Quality (ASQ) family member.

Recognized for exceptional service and community contributions through plaques, commemorations and ceremonies, Bob's unique ideas, methods and technologies have served to benefit Government and Industry civil servants, contractors and Innovators that package, handle, store long term, kit, repair and transport ultra-sensitive ESD devices in low RH and non-negotiable environments on land, air, sea and space.
